Agro-industrial biotechnologies
Microalgae production systems for the agro-food and energy sectors.
- natural compounds of interest for the food and nutraceutical industry:
– natural pigments (phycocyanin, carotenoids);
– antioxidants;
– proteins;
– biopolymers;
– long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. - production of fatty acids (biodiesel), biogas, bioethanol for energy applications;
- biogas upgrading;
- fixation of carbon dioxide from industrial discharges or other activities.
Bioreactor manufacturing at industrial scale is capable to produce low impact natural algal molecules only if the production process is economically and ecologically sustainable.
Abel Nutraceuticals is part of an interdisciplinary research group (Photo B.OTIC) focused on the development of planar photobioreactors able to operate massive microalgal growth.
The combination of skills and innovative technologies allows a significant increase in productivity and a drastic reduction in energy consumption.
This innovative microalgae cultivation technology overcomes the disadvantages and limitations of industrial solutions currently on the market both in terms of energy costs and biomass production yields per soil unit.

Advantages of the used technology:
- isolated growth environment and extreme ease modulation of growth parameters;
- optimized energy consumption and homogeneous illumination of the biomass are obtained by reduced optical path and adaptable light spectrum;
- precise parameter modulation during growth for the culture stimulation of natural compounds;
- scalable system integration with downstream processes (i.e. separation and transformation of biomasses).
